HOW HAS YOUR WRITING EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?
– Cathy Kelly, the author of 12 novels including Homecoming, Once in a Lifetime and Lessons in Heartbreak.
Very difficult question! Writing is never stagnant and ages and changes as the writer does. Since I started writing, I’ve become a mother and an UNICEF Ireland Ambassador, which means travelling to Africa seeing how other women live their lives. Both these things change a person hugely and this naturally impacts on my writing. I definitely write about darker subjects now than in my earlier novels. I still write with humour (I hope!) yet I have more confidence to deal with difficult themes from suicide, illness and addiction. I’ve now written twelve novels and am working on my thirteenth, and yes, my thirteenth covers different territory from my first.
