REVIEWED BY KIRA SLAUGHTER Girl in a spin

She’s a party girl. He’s a Party Leader. Things are about to get complicated…

Jenny Hannigan might be a good-time party girl but all she secretly craves is a life of domestic bliss and solid respectability.

So when she crashes into the arms of Richard Allam- the young, handsome, recently separated politician hotly tipped to lead his party to victory in the upcoming election- she thinks she’s found exactly what she is looking for.

But Jenny isn’t exactly politician’s wife material so Richard recruits the intensely private but charismatic publicist Dev Tennant to ‘spin’ Jenny to the Party…and the public.

As the election gathers momentum, it turns out that Jenny has more than one skeleton in her closet and Dev is working overtime to try and keep them there.

After reading Clodagh Murphy’s debut novel, The Disengagement Ring, I really couldn’t wait to get my hands on Girl In A Spin.

The main character, Jenny, is a girl who is always up for a good time, and when she meets Richard she thinks she’s found the man she wants to marry. After recently splitting up with his wife, Richard is not yet ready to reveal his and Jenny’s relationship to the world and the media.

At first Jenny’s character really annoyed me and I just wanted to shake her as she seemed willing to do everything Richard wanted her to and to go along with the charade of hiding their relationship. I didn’t trust Richard from the beginning and at certain times throughout the book my suspicions were proved right. He was too smooth and charming and that immediately gets my back up!

In the eyes of Richard’s colleagues and opponents in the election, Jenny is not exactly perfect girlfriend material, so in steps Dev Tennant, publicist and all round miracle worker. He seems able to put a positive spin on the skeletons that are uncovered by the media from Jenny’s closet.  As soon as Dev was introduced in the book I liked him as he had a lot of time for Jenny when most people just brushed her off as an empty headed bimbo. Jenny has deep seated issues that are uncovered throughout the book, and Dev seems to be the only one who takes time to sit down and listen to her. It also helps that they have wicked chemistry and that you can tell that they have feelings for each other.

As the book progressed I was practically chomping at the bit waiting for Jenny to come to her senses and realise that Richard is wasting her time and that her and Dev make a much better couple. In typical chick lit fashion it takes you on a bit of a rollercoaster and the storyline has so many twists and turns that you don’t see coming, which in my eyes makes for a pretty damn good book!

A thoroughly enjoyable read that more than matched up to its predecessor, and has me waiting for a third instalment from Clodagh Murphy.

I’m giving this a 10/10!
